Thessalus of Tralles

Thessalus of Tralles is a physician and Greek astrologer of s I. He was born in Tralles in Asia minor. He moved to Rome, at the time of Nero. He wrote to 65. According to Franz Cumont (1918), the physician and the astrologer are one and the same person, but other scientists (including Garth Fowden) distinguished.

The doctor: methodical school

He was the head of the so-called “orderly school” (or Methodist) of ancient Greek medicine. This school sought to seize “communities” that characterize the State of health and to bring back the sick body in these key States. The astrologer: the astrobotanique

Thessalus of Tralles has developed the astrobotanique: it binds Botany and astrology, as Pseudo-Néchepso. Under the astrobotanique, “regions of the Earth and the members of the human body, plants are devolved to the patronage of the decans, or zodiac signs, namely planets” (has. j.) (Festugière); for example, verbena is Venus, the plantain in March.

Pseudo-Thessalus: Letter to César Auguste

A letter attributed to Thessalus, addressed to Emperor Claude I (41-54), traces a spiritual autobiography. It is this same Thessalus of Tralles (according to Paul Tannery, Franz Cumont) or author a Pseudo-Thessalus, Galien (death to 200) (as Alan Scott) drive.
